The city of Wad Madani (Medani in English) is located in east-central Sudan on the west bank of the Blue Nile river. It is situated some 135 kilometres south east of the capital Khartoum and is the capital of the Al Jazirah state. At one point in its history it was just a small outpost in the vast Turko-Egyptian region, relying on trade in peanuts, barley, wheat and other cereal crops. However, its population is almost 350,000 and it boasts a well-respected private university called the Wad Medani Ahlia College. |

At one point in its history it also boasted a thriving racecourse where meetings were organised by the Wad Medani Racing Club and where one of the principal races was the Surbiba Scurry Stakes. The very rare Members badges below are shown courtesy of Vinny Hinde, part of his eclectic collection. |

I am grateful to Hugh Bulmer for the scan of the rare silver salver for the Surbiiba Scurry Stakes from Wad Medani, contested in the 1932-33 season |
